Duckworth wins BCoE Student Publication Award

On January 29th, the Bagley College of Engineering recognized the first group of winners of the Student Publication Award. Thirty-four students were recognized,including STaRS lab member Dexter Duckworth. From the press release:

“To qualify for a publication award, an undergraduate student must have co-authored at least one published, peer-reviewed conference paper, and a graduate student must have co-authored a peer-reviewed journal article. Each qualified student author received a cash award and a certificate of achievement.”

Dexter is an undergraduate in Electrical and Computer Engineering, and a member of the STaRS lab.

Wuisan to Attend the 2014 CRA-Women Graduate Cohort Workshop

The Computer Science and Engineering Department of Mississippi State University had seven graduate students selected to attend the 2014 CRA-Women Graduate Cohort Workshop that will be held April 11-12, 2014 in Santa Clara, CA. These workshops provide mentoring support for women in the first three years of their graduate studies in computing. The following students have been accepted:

Duckworth Presents Research in Sweden

Dexter Duckworth, junior CPE major, presents his research at the IEEE International Symposium on Safety Security and Rescue Robotics in Linkoping, Sweden. This work was done with Dr. Cindy Bethel, CSE faculty, and Dr. Robin Murphy at Texas A&M.

Wuisan Receives Dr. Kanako Miura Travel Grant

Stephanie Wuisan, graduate student in Computer Science, was one of six recipients of the Dr. Kanako Miura Travel Grant to Humanoids 2013 held in Atlanta, Georgia.

Dr. Miura worked at AIST (National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology, Japan) on the world-famous HRP-4C robot. This agile robot (nicknamed “Miim”) brings hope to the dream of human-like robots operating in real human environments. In the spring of 2013 Dr. Miura passed away after a tragic cycling accident. The entire Humanoids community was deeply saddened by this event and created an award to remember both Dr. Miura’s achievements and incredible energy as a dear friend and colleague.

Bethel Selected to Serve on Programme Committee of HRI 2014 Conference

Dr. Cindy Bethel has been invited to serve on the Programme Committee of the 2014 and 9th edition of the ACM/IEEE International Conference on Human-Robot Interaction (HRI 2014) that will be held in Bielefeld, Germany from March 3-6, 2014. The HRI conference has grown into the leading conference in the field, and attracts a large number of submissions from which typically 20 to 25% are accepted for presentation. The paper selection process relies on experts across regions and disciplines to serve on the Programme Committee. Additionally, Dr. Bethel has been invited to serve in the position of the Lead Co-Chair of Late Breaking Reports on the Organizing Committee for this conference.

Arya wins Best Student Paper Award at SPIE XXIII 2013

Ankit Arya was awarded the Best Student Paper Award in the Automatic Target Recognition track at SPIE XXIII 2013 held in Baltimore, MD for the paper titled “Multi-Kernel Aggregation of Local and Global Features in Long Wave Infrared for Detection of SWAT Teams in Challenging Environments,” authored by Ankit Arya, Derek Anderson, Cindy L. Bethel, and Daniel Carruth. This award was sponsored by the Lockheed Martin Corporation.

Psychosocial Robotic Systems Working Group Awarded ‘Think Big’ Grant

The Think Big @ Mississippi State University Project Selection Committee has selected the following project for funding, Developing a Robotic Application for Bullying Intervention. The project team is interdisciplinary and comprised of undergraduate and graduate students from the College of Arts and Sciences and the Bagley College of Engineering. The project will be advised by the Psychosocial Robotic Systems Working group sponsored by ORED that is led by Dr. Cindy Bethel.

The investigators for this project are: Megan Stubbs-Research Team Leader (M.S. student), Jennifer Carruth (M.S. student), and Jeannice Louine (Ph.D. student) from Sociology, Kaleb Stuart and Kayla Huddleston, (B.S. students) from Computer Science and Engineering.
